For this backyard ADU, we designed a hung cladding system made of terracotta block. Working with an Ohio company that has produced extruded structural terracotta units for generations, we developed a method of creating a new tile by splitting a standard three-chamber hollow block. The resulting crenulated clay tiles are coated in a deep green masonry pigment and clipped to a lapped aluminum frame. The interior is carefully lined with highly textured and toned materials, including stained walnut panels, wall to wall lacquered shelving, and aggregate concrete floors.
