Silver House Studio is the exploration of the thickening and exaggeration of conventional building systems. The existing building is a small art studio that is pushed up against a hillside and buried under a heavy coat of greenery. Balanced above it, on the hill, is a 1920s bungalow with silver-painted lap siding, a beautiful, unusual little house with a big pyramid roof. The art studio is designed to be equally particular. The project proposes a new roof made of hung corrugated concrete shingles that have been dyed a range of near-black tones. The new covering becomes a dark and textured foreground for the silver figure beyond. The innermost layer is a custom-manufactured insulation quilt that hangs from the structure and slips in and around the interior components. It rolls up for windows and doors and peels back for lighting and outlets.
