We were commissioned to renovate an existing guest house into an ADU. The existing guest house was built as a copy of the 1956 post and beam home by Burton Schutt that occupies the site. We considered what it would mean to bring a light touch and material swerve to the rich character of the existing building. To that end we designed a delicate steel frame and perforated screen to organize the interior volume of the building. The exterior is treated with corrugated fiber cement panels to give weight and texture to the little hillside building. Details and material studies in aggregate concrete are also deployed in the surrounding landscape and are pulled into the guest house for a deeper connectivity between interior and exterior.
