Rubber Table

Rubber Table takes a found wood TV dinner tray and recasts it in urethane rubber. While molded from a generic original, our Rubber Table has additional breaks, leaning on material configurations to enact behavioral changes. Telescoping brass tubes, strung with ultramarine elastic cord, make up the bones of the table. We place four joints on each leg, the whole table slumping rather than packing flat. The rubber is a solid cast with two different shore hardnesses. Shore 80 is stiffer and used for the tabletop. Shore 20 is flexible and used for the legs, and they “break” at the brass tube seams. The urethane rubber is unpigmented and has an amber tone that darkens with age and use. The unpigmented tone retains its transparency, giving the table a gelatin-like look and feel.

Rubber Table was designed for Chamber Collection #04, curated by Michael Merideth and Hilary Sample.
