In 1956 an immaculate, mid-century, post and beam home designed by Burton Schutt was constructed in the hills of LA. Twenty years later a little copy of that house was built on the same property as a guest house. Commissioned to renovate and convert the guest house to an ADU, we considered what it would mean to make yet another little copy. With a light touch, we have designed a mini steel frame post and beam object to sit inside the guest house. On the interior, thin, perforated materials and nuanced colors are introduced into the project to give it a delicate quality. The exterior is treated with corrugated fiber cement panels to give weight and texture to the little hillside building. Details and material studies in aggregate concrete are also deployed in the surrounding landscape and are pulled into the guest house for a deeper connectivity between interior and exterior.
