Commissioned by the Princeton School of Architecture to exhibit a set of models of recent work, we took the opportunity to advance a set of material and tectonic studies we had been developing for the Silver House Studio project. Guided by the client’s desire for privacy, the Silver House Studio proposes layers of interior and exterior cladding systems. In order to study the potential of the design, we built a set of full-scale wall mock-ups and installed them in the gallery. Each layer was fabricated and tested in Los Angeles, shipped to New Jersey, and then laid up, one layer at a time, as a dry-fit assembly. In this process, what would normally be mechanically attached had to lean and hang, leading to a relaxed and casual material presence.

Our ongoing study of color correcting, color grading, and color stacking was further advanced in a public conversation we hosted with artist James Welling and architect/scholar Mario Gooden. Welling and Gooden study the physical and political constructions of color in their own manner. This was the highlight of the project for us. Perhaps the best measure of a successful exhibition is if it can be the backdrop for good conversation.
